MADE Workflows > Create a Model-based RCM analysis
WF75: Create a Model-based RCM analysis
Pre-Requisites
- A. MADE Model: For Model-based FMEA, a functional model containing items, functions and failure modes defined is required. Mission Profile, item failure distribution and its parameters, and MALDT are required for metrics (reliability and maintainability) calculations within RCM.
- B. RAM Module: access to the Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) Module is required to access Model-based RCM Analyses.
Detailed Steps
- Open Model-based RCM — select 'Model-Based RCM' in the 'Analyses' tab of the menu bar.
- Create RCM Analysis — click '+' to create a new RCM analysis and define a Name and Description.
- Select RCM Configuration — configuration defines the decision trees to determine significant function, categorize failure effect, evaluate tasks and select applicable tasks. Predefined RCM configurations are based on MSG-3 and RCM II methodologies; user-defined configurations can be imported.
- Decision — Workflow type Model-based FMEA? Select how the data that the RCM analysis is based on will be compiled. If Yes (Model-based FMEA), proceed to Step 9 (Select FMEA type — data compiled from the MADE model). If No (FMEA data import), proceed to Step 5.
- Define System Name — define the name of the system that will be created to contain the components imported as part of the FMEA import workflow. By default, the system name is the analysis name.
- Browse FMEA data file — browse and select the excel file to import FMEA data.
- Decision — FMEA Configuration exists? If no, Create FMEA Import Configuration (see WF77). If yes, proceed to Step 8.
- Select an FMEA Import Configuration from the list of existing configurations.
- Select FMEA type — select the type of FMEA for which data will be compiled from the MADE model.
- Select Analysis Options — for the chosen FMEA type, select the level of analysis (system or component/subsystem), propagation method, end effect, and criticality profile. FMEA will be generated and attached to the analysis based on these selections.
- Select Criticality Threshold — select a criticality threshold to limit the inclusion of failure modes in the analysis.
- Review FMEA data — review the FMEA data that is imported into the analysis.
- Create Contributor Profile(s) — clicking Finish after reviewing FMEA data prompts creation of contributor(s) involved in the analysis. Click New to define Name, Company, Title, and assign Role for each contributor. Roles and descriptions are created in Preferences > Application Preferences > Modeling > RCM > Contributors Roles and saved at application level for reuse.
- RCM analysis is created. See WF19 to continue RCM analysis. For the FMEA data import methodology, a new system with model items, functions, failure modes, criticality and reliability data points is created.
Screen-by-screen detail (from embedded screenshots)
- Step 1: Open Model-based RCM — Main menu: Analyses > Model Based RCM.
- Step 2: Create RCM Analysis — "Model-based RCM" management view: RCM Analyses table (Name, System, Configuration, Workflow Type) and "RCM Analysis Details" / "Mission Profile Definition" panels. Click '+' to open "Create RCM Analysis wizard": "Enter the details of the RCM Analysis and select the Workflow Type." Name (e.g. "Analysis 1"), Description (e.g. "The following analysis is based on the Regular Trip mission for maintenance costs. The main candidate is the Planetary Gearbox Rear as this is modelled for training purposes."). Second example: Name "Analysis 2", Description "Analysis created using FMEA/FMECA excel import for training purposes."
- Step 3: Select RCM Configuration & Workflow Type — "Configuration" dropdown (e.g. "MSG-3" — "A RCM configuration representing the MSG-3 standard.") with "Edit/Add New..." button (configurations cannot yet be directly defined/edited within MADE — support is planned). "Workflow Type" dropdown: "Model-based FMEA" (uses data from the MADE model to generate possible Maintainable Items, Functions, and Failure Modes) or "FMEA data import" (imports FMEA data to generate Maintainable Items/Functions/Failure Modes and creates a new MADE System to contain them). If Model-based FMEA, an additional "FMEA/FMECA analysis type" dropdown appears (e.g. "CA (MIL-STD-1629A, Quantitative Standard)").
- Steps 5,6,8: Define System Name, Browse FMEA data file, Select FMEA Import Configuration — (FMEA data import path) "Specify the FMEA data file location and import configuration." System > Name field (e.g. "Landing Gear (FMEA Import)"). FMEA data file location (e.g. "C:\Users\Public\FMEA Import for MADE Training.xlsx") with Browse... button. "FMEA Data Import Configuration" dropdown (e.g. "FMEA import for MADE training (From File)") with "Use File..." and "Configure..." buttons.
- Step 9: Select FMEA type — (Model-based FMEA path) "FMEA/FMECA analysis type" dropdown options: CA (MIL-STD-1629A, Quantitative Standard) [selected], FMECA (MIL-STD-1629A, Custom), FMECA (RPN, PHMT), FMECA (MIL-STD-882E), Design Potential FMECA (RPN, Custom), FMEA (MIL-STD-1629A).
- Step 10: Select Analysis Options — "Analysis Options" page: "Level of Analysis" radio (System / Component-Subsystem), "Propagation Method" radio (FCM / Bond), "Output Options" checkboxes (Ignore injected failures, Include nominal paths, Root causes only, System failures only), "Path Control Number" checkbox (Show Path Control Number). "Analysis Context Summary": End Effect (e.g. "Vehicle System"), System (e.g. "Vehicle System"), Criticality Profile (e.g. "PHMT 1629A Criticality"). "System Model" tree to select scope (e.g. Vehicle System > Coupling, Driveline > Differential/Driveshaft/Half Shaft Front/Half Shaft Rear/Planetary Geabox Front/Planetary Gearbox Rear/Transmission/Wheel Front/Wheel Rear/Wheel Resistance Rear).
- Step 11: Select Criticality Threshold — "Criticality Threshold" page: radio options — No Criticality Threshold [selected in example], Fuzzy Criticality (Threshold e.g. 8), RPN (Threshold e.g. 800), MIL-STD-1629A (Criticality Number (Cm) e.g. 1.00E+00), MIL-STD-882E (Risk e.g. High), ARP4761 (Risk e.g. High), ISO 26262 (ASIL Risk e.g. ASIL D). "Any paths that fall below the specified criticality will be omitted from the report."
- Step 12: Review FMEA Data — Table of imported/generated FMEA rows: Item ID, Item, Function, Failure Mode, Cause, Local Effects, Next Effects, End Effect, and (for excel import) Failure Mode ID — e.g. rows for "Wheel Brake Assembly" (LG003) > "Shutoff/Anti-skid valves" (LG003001) > Failure Mode "Anti-skid failure" (Cause "Valve malfunction, electrical fault", Local Effect "Brake pressure not modulated", Next Effect "Wheel skid", End Effect "Tire damage, reduced control"); "Multi-Disk Carbon Brakes" (LG003002) > "Brake overheating" (Cause "Excessive braking, cooling failure"); "Retraction System" (LG002) > "Gear fails to retract/extend"; "Steering Wheel System" (LG001) > "Loss of steering control".
