3. Sensor Library

The PHM module contains a sensor library to add, configure and store sensors and sensor information. This library offers a central location to manage sensors for different flow properties or symptoms. The sensor library consists of a Sample Sensor Library and New User Library. The sample sensor library lists test sensors in MADE which can be used for instructive purposes, while the user-created sensor library lists all custom sensors created by the user.

3.1 Access Sensor Library

To access the Sensor Library:

  1. Select the PHM module icon in the icon toolbar
  2. Select Modelling from the main menu, then select Sensor Library
    • Alternatively, select the Sensor Library icon in the icon toolbar

3.2 Navigating the Sensor Library Editor

MADE will automatically open the Sensor Library editor in the same area as the System Model. The editor consists of a Sensor Library section on the left, which shows a hierarchy of sensor libraries, subcategories, and sensors. The right side consists of contextual sections (sections that change depending on the item selected in the Sensor Libraries section), including:

  • Library Details — Contains fields for the Library Name & Description
  • Category Details — Contains fields for the Library Name and Description
  • Sensed Elements (Sensor Category) — Shows all flows, flow properties and symptom types for the user to select when a sensor category is selected
  • Sensed Elements (Sensor) — Lists all flow properties that are applicable to the sensor based on the selection in sensor category
  • Sensor Details — Contains fields for sensor information
  • Parameters — Contains fields for capturing sensor parameters, i.e. POD and specificity
  • Additional Sensor Information — Contains fields for capturing information not covered in the sensor details section such as signal type, detection mode, operating environment, etc.

3.3 Sample Sensor Library

The Sample Sensor library features pre-defined sensors provided by PHM Technology and features an extensive list of sensor categories. Sample sensors are not editable and can only be retrieved and allocated into a model. Note that sample sensors contain default/generic sensor parameters.

To navigate the Sample Sensors Library:

  1. Select (left click) the arrow to the left of a sensor category
  2. Select (left click) a sensor to view its details

3.4 Creating a New User Library

The New User Library is an editable sensor library that can be customized and edited by the user. This library can be configured to suit the user by creating multiple sensor categories and sub-categories, which can be fully reconfigured. New sensors can be created, configured, assigned to, or deleted from current and new sensor category folders.

To create a new sensor library:

  1. Select the New Library icon (alternatively, right-click the blank space where the libraries are listed and select New Library from the right-click menu)
  2. Select the Name field to rename the library
  3. Select the Description field to provide more details about the sensor library

3.5 Import/Export a User Library

The Sensor Library editor has the capability of importing and exporting user libraries to and from MADE. These library files are saved in an XML format and can be transferred to another MADE application.

To export an existing user library

  1. Select a User Library from the Sensor Library tree menu
  2. Select the Export Library icon
  3. Specify the directory and exported library filename
  4. Select the lock checkbox to make the library read-only
  5. Select OK to complete the export process

To import an existing user library

  1. Select the Import Library icon
  2. Locate the directory and select the user library (XML file)
  3. Select OK to complete the import process

3.6 Creating & Editing Sensor Categories

A category is a sensor folder or sub-folder used to group similar sensors and sensing types.

To create a new category:

  1. Select the Sensor Category icon (alternatively, right-click on the new user library and select New Category)

3.6.1 Category Details Section

This section shows the name and description of the selected sensor category.

To edit the name of an existing Category:

  1. Select the Name field to edit the category name
  2. Select the Description to provide more details about the sensor category

3.6.2 Sensed Elements Section

This section shows all the sensed flow categories (Energy, Signal, Material), flows, flow properties and symptoms in the MADE taxonomy. The user selects the check boxes next to each item that is relevant to the selected sensor category.

To edit the sensed elements of a Category:

  1. Select (left click) a Category from the Details section
  2. Select (left click) the relevant symptoms and functional flow properties

3.7 Creating & Editing Sensors

The user can create, manage and duplicate sensors under sensor categories within a User Sensor library. Sensor details, parameters, sensed elements and additional sensor information are used to provide additional information for each sensor.

To create a sensor

  1. Right-click a sensor category/sub-category (folder)
  2. Under the right-click menu, select New Sensor (alternatively, select the Add a Sensor icon)

To copy and paste a Sensor/Sensor Category

  1. Right-click a Sensor/Sensor Category in the Sensor Libraries tree menu
  2. From the right-click menu, select Copy Sensor/Copy Category (alternatively, select the copy icon)
  3. Right-click the target sensor category and select Paste Sensor/Paste Category
  4. Verify that the copied sensor or category is present under the same sensor category

To delete a Sensor/Sensor Category

  1. Select (right-click) the Sensor/Sensor Category
  2. From the right-click menu, select Delete (alternatively, select the Delete icon)

3.8 Sensor Details Section

The Sensor Details section displays sensor information including sensor name, dimensions, weight, sensor costs, cost of monitoring, MTTF and replacement fields to capture sensor information. Names, dimensions and weight define the general description of the sensor, however cost and time fields all impact sensor analyses.

To edit a field:

  1. Select (left click) an alphanumeric field to be edited
  2. Enter required details

To change the dimension units:

  1. Select (left click) the drop-down menu
  2. Select the desired unit

3.9 Sensed Elements Section

The Sensed Elements Navigation Menu lists all flows that are measured by the sensor, as defined by the category the sensor is allocated to. Other flow properties or symptoms that were not selected are hidden.

To disable a Flow Property or Symptom:

  1. Select (left-click) the Flow Property or Symptom
  2. Ensure the Flow Property or Symptom is unchecked

3.10 Parameters Section

The Parameters section displays the performance of a sensor. The editable fields consist of two parameters: estimated probability of detection (POD), also known as sensitivity, and estimated specificity. Estimated POD is the percentage likelihood that the sensor will correctly detect the sensed condition, while specificity is the percentage likelihood that the sensor will not suffer a false alarm. These two main sensor parameters influence additional parameters, listed below:

  • False Negative Rate — False Negatives as a proportion of all positive responses
  • False Alarm Rate — False Positives as a proportion of all Negative responses
  • Balanced Accuracy — Test accuracy calculated in a way that avoids inflated values where the dataset is imbalanced, e.g. when the failure condition under test has a very low occurrence
  • Likelihood Ratio Positive — How useful the sensor is in detecting the presence of the failure condition. A value lower than 1 indicates that the test is associated with the condition. The higher the value, the more probable the condition is for a given sensor indication.
  • Likelihood Ratio Negative — How useful the sensor is in detecting the presence of the failure condition. A value lower than 1 indicates that the test is associated with the condition. The lower the value, the more probable the condition is for a given sensor indication.

To edit a value:

  1. Select (left click) the percentage field to be changed and enter a new value
