WF30: Conduct Find & Replace
Pre-requisites
- MADE Project: a configured project with defined model items, advanced properties and failures diagrams to enable search.
Detailed Descriptions (numbered steps)
- Access 'Find / Replace' under 'Edit' in the main menu bar.
- Use the landing page Basic Search to conduct a simple text-based search to find model item(s) by name or synonym. Input text into the Search box and click 'Search'.
- If more specific search required, use Advanced Search. If not, continue to Replace tab.
- Open 'Advanced' tab to access Advanced Search.
- Add Search Term(s) using the green plus icon button, defining the Model Parameter and Operator of the search term from their respective drop-down menus. Then define a valid Value and click 'OK' to create the search term.
- Add search terms as required, then continue to the Advanced Search.
- Define if all search terms must match or at least one search term to match, then click 'Search'.
- Open 'Replace' tab to select model parameters to update.
- Select model parameter to change, from the drop-down list, and then define a valid value to update to. The list will filter according to selected model parameter.
- Select target model parameter(s) to replace with the defined value.
- Select 'replace' to update model parameter value(s).
- Target model parameter(s) found and replaced with updated value.
Fields referenced in the diagram
- Add Search Term(s): Model Parameter, Operator, Value
- Define Update Parameter Value: Model Parameter, Value
Decision points
- Conduct Advanced Search? — Yes → Open Advanced Search; No → Open Replace Page.
- All Search Terms Defined? — No → loop back to Add Search Term(s); Yes → Conduct Advanced Search.

- "Find / Replace" tab: left nav Basic (selected), Advanced, Replace. "Search" — "Use the Text search to find model items by name or synonym." Search field (empty), "Search" button. Note: "The text search will provide partially matches for model items. If you want to search based on model parameters use the Advanced search. (? = any character, * = any sequence of characters)" "Search Result" panel: "Model item" column header (empty).
Step 4: Open Advanced Search
- "Advanced" tab: "Use the Advanced search to find model items using a combination of search terms." Radio "All search terms must match." (selected) / "At least one search term to match." Table (Model parameter/Operator/Value) empty, with add/edit/delete icon buttons. "Search" button. "Search Result" panel empty ("Model item" column).
Step 5: Add Search Term(s)
- "New Search Term" dialog: "Create a new search term for the Advanced search." Model Parameter dropdown expanded: Characteristic Life, Controllability, Delay Time, Difficulty of Detection, Duration of Operation, Failure Effect Probability, Failure Mode Ratio, Item Number, Mean Time To Repair, "Mean Time to Failure" (highlighted/selected), Name, Part Failure Rate, Probability/Occurrence, Response Narrative, Severity, Slope, Software Control, Spares on Hand, Turn Around Time, Vendor Name, Vendor Number.
- Second instance: Model Parameter "Mean Time to Failure", Operator dropdown expanded: Equal, "Less than" (highlighted/selected), Greater than, Less or equal, Greater or equal, Not equal.
- Third instance: Model Parameter "Mean Time to Failure", Operator "Less than", Value "3000.00", Search term "Mean Time to Failure less than 3000.00". Buttons OK, Cancel.
Step 7: Conduct Advanced Search
- "Advanced" tab: Table populated with one row: Model parameter "Mean Time to Failure", Operator "Less than", Value "3000.00". Radio "All search terms must match." selected. "Search Result" tree: Vehicle System > Coupling, Power Generation > Fuel Tank.
Step 8: Open Replace Page
- "Replace" tab: "Use the replace feature to quickly change model parameters on model items." "Select the model parameter to change:" dropdown (empty). Checkbox "Filter"; buttons "Update All", "Update None". "New value for model parameter:" field (empty). Button "Replace". "Search Result" tree with columns Model item/Current value/Update: Vehicle System > Coupling, Power Generation > Fuel Tank (all empty values).
Step 9: Define Update Parameter Value
- "Replace" tab: "Select the model parameter to change:" dropdown expanded showing Characteristic Life, Controllability, Delay Time, Difficulty of Detection, Duration of Operation, Failure Effect Probability, Failure Mode Ratio, Item Number, "Mean Time To Repair" (highlighted/selected), Mean Time to Failure, Name, Part Failure Rate, Probability/Occurrence, Response Narrative, Severity, Slope, Software Control, Spares on Hand, Turn Around Time, Vendor Name, Vendor Number. "Search Result" table: Vehicle System (Current value 1.00, Update "No") > Coupling (1.00, No), Power Generation (1.00, No) > Fuel Tank (1.00, No).
- Second instance: "Select the model parameter to change:" "Mean Time To Repair", checkbox "Filter" checked, "New value for model parameter:" "15". Same Search Result tree with Current value 1.00 for all rows, Update "No" for all.
Step 10: Select Target(s) to Update
- "Replace" tab: Model parameter "Mean Time To Repair", Filter checked, New value "15". "Search Result" tree: Vehicle System (1.00, No) > Coupling (1.00, No); Power Generation (1.00, Yes, checked) > Fuel Tank (1.00, Yes, checked) — both highlighted blue.
Step 11: Execute Replace
- "*Find / Replace" (unsaved) tab: same Replace configuration, "Replace" button highlighted. "Search Result" table updated: Vehicle System (1.00, No) > Coupling (1.00, No); Power Generation (15.00, Yes) > Fuel Tank (15.00, Yes) — highlighted rows show updated Current value "15.00".
