4.7 Functional Failure Analysis

The Functional Failure Analysis tab contains a list of functions and failure modes of the Maintainable Item, along with the decision logic from the selected RCM configuration (see RCM Management) to evaluate these functions. The failure modes of the functions that are deemed Significant qualify for further RCM assessment (see Failure Mode Assessment).

The process in this tab involves first selecting a Maintainable Item, then selecting a function, and finally answering the decision logic questions (Figure 54).

4.7.1 Maintainable Item FMEA

This section allows selection of a Maintainable Item from the list of Potential MSIs identified in the Significant Item Search step, to view its FMEA information.

To select a Maintainable Item

1. Click the drop-down button
2. Select an item

To adjust the columns in the table to view the FMEA

1. Click Column Preferences
2. Select the required columns
3. Click Ok

4.7.2 Decision Tree Workflow

This section presents the decision logic from NAVAIR used to assess the Maintainable Item functions that are incorporated in the default MSG-3 and RCM II configurations. It facilitates documentation of narratives and justifications for the responses to the logic questions. Both the responses to the decision logic questions (Yes/No) and the respective narratives/justifications are preserved.

To assess a function

1. Select a function from the table
2. Answer the questions in the Decision Tree Workflow
3. Enter narrative/justification (optional)
4. Select the next function and continue the assessment until all the functions for the selected Maintainable Item are evaluated

To reset an answer for any logic question

• Click on the answered radio button

To open a significant function(s) for any maintainable item at any stage during the analysis

• Click the associated icon

The failure modes of the functions deemed Significant qualify for further RCM assessment. To assess the failure modes within a function:

1. Select a function from the table
2. Click the corresponding action icon to open Failure Mode Assessment
