Discussion 5.2.1: Maintenance Properties

MADE captures the maintenance actions of the system and model elements (subsystems, components or parts) in the Maintenance Actions page under advanced properties.

Exercise 5.2.2: Create a Maintenance Action for the Fuel Tank

  1. Select the Fuel Tank component in the Project Explorer
  2. From the drop down menu, select the Maintenance Actions option
  3. Select the icon to add a new maintenance action
  4. Select the check box to set the new Maintenance Action as default
  5. In the Maintenance Action Details section, populate:
    • Action ID: 001
    • Action Name: Breakdown Maintenance
    • Description: Breakdown Repair based on MCE Analysis 1.
    • Location of Maintenance: Field
    • Maintenance Type: Breakdown - Repair
    • Maintenance interval: 2593.870 hours
    • Effectiveness factor: 0.05

Icon reference in the editor:

  • Select to create a New Maintenance Task
  • Select to create a New Personnel Record — assigns a new personnel to a task
  • Select to rearrange tasks/personnel/items
  • Select to create New Maintenance Items
  • Select to delete selected tasks/personnel/items
  1. Select the Maintenance - Tasks and Personnel Tab
  2. Create a New Task, rename it Detection / Diagnosis
  3. Select Checkbox: Downtime
  4. Enter Duration (hrs): 0.5
  5. Create a New Personnel, rename Technician
  6. Rate (USD/person/hr): $100; # Personnel: 1

Enter the following tasks/personnel/durations/rates under Maintenance Task and Personnel:

  1. Select Maintenance - Equipment and Consumables tab
  2. Enter Item ID, Item Name, Cost and Quantity:

Exercise 5.2.3: Import a Maintenance Action for the Control Unit

  1. Select the Control Unit component in the system model
  2. Select Maintenance Actions
  3. Select the import icon
  4. Select 001 — Breakdown Maintenance from Fuel Tank then select Import
  5. Change the imported maintenance action Name and Type to Scheduled - Repair:
    • Maintenance Interval: 800 hour interval
    • Action Name: Scheduled Repair
    • Description: Scheduled Repair based on MCE Analysis 1.

Discussion 5.2.4: Linked Failures

  • Maintenance actions address/mitigate failures. This interaction between the maintenance action and the failures they address is captured in the Linked Failures section of the Maintenance Action Editor.
  • Failures found in the maintenance actions editor are based on the failures modelled in the component's failure diagram.

Exercise 5.2.4: Linking Failures

  1. On the Scheduled Repair action on the Control Unit, navigate to the Linked Failures section
  2. Uncheck all other failures except the Open circuit failure

Exercise 5.2.5: Setting a Restorative Action with Linked Failure

  1. Create two new maintenance actions using the add button
  2. Rename one action Breakdown 1 and the other Breakdown 2
  3. Navigate to the Linked Failures tab of Breakdown 1 and deselect checkboxes so that Dielectric Strength Decreased and Electrical Potential Decreased are linked
  4. Navigate to the Linked Failures tab of Breakdown 2 and deselect checkboxes so that Open Circuit and Property Mismatch are linked
  5. Add Maintenance Tasks (Task and Personnel) for each Breakdown:
    • Breakdown 1: Task Name: Repair 1; Downtime: Checked; Duration: 4 hours
    • Breakdown 2: Task Name: Repair 2; Downtime: Checked; Duration: 2 hours
  6. Select both actions as Active via the Maintenance Actions section
  7. Select Restorative Action source as Linked Failure(s) MTTR

Exercise 5.2.6: Create a Maintenance Action Report

To generate a Maintenance Actions Report:

  1. Select Reports > Report Wizard from the main menu
  2. Select Maintenance Actions Report
  3. Select Next
  4. Select Breakdown Maintenance for the Fuel Tank component
    • Confirm the Time Span is the current mission profile: New Group
  5. Set formatting or select Generate

The report consists of several sections:

  • Maintenance Actions Summary — Aggregates costs & time spans across all items
  • Maintenance Actions Dashboard — Pie charts visualise maintenance breakdown
  • Maintenance Actions Summary — Aggregates costs & time spans across all item MAs
  • Maintenance Actions Breakdown — Records all fields from Maintenance Actions page per item
