2 Introduction
The Mission Profile Definition (MPD) editor is used to define the operational duration a system or item experiences for a specified mission profile or group, as well as mission success & functional criteria, and operating mode. This aggregated information is used for RAM analyses such as RBD analysis.
A mission profile allows the user to determine and define the mission parameters within which a system will operate. These may include time-based segmentations of a mission (phases & segments), quantitative parameters (e.g. velocity, volume), mission success criteria, and duty cycles for an item or group of items in a system. Mission profiles can be repeated multiple times using mission cycles, while multiple mission profiles can be aggregated into a mission group.
3 MPD Workflow
Figure 1 ("MPD Workflow") depicts "WF11: Create Mission Profiles":
Pre-requisites:
- A. Mission Parameters: Mission details including Mission phases/segments.
- B. FBD Model: System model containing components (See WF03-05).
- C. Unit Life Configurations: Model items configured to accept Unit Life input (See WF41).
Flowchart steps:
- Open Mission Profile Definition
- Create New Mission Profile
- Enter MPD Details (fed by: Mission Profile Details, Documents & Images)
- Create Mission Parameter(s) (fed by: Parameter Name(s), Parameter Units, Initial Value(s))
- Create Mission Phases and Segments (fed by: Mission Phases, Mission Segments, Phase/Segment detail)
- Create Specialized Phases (fed by: Specialized Phases, Assoc. Phases/Segments)
- Create Mission Conditions (fed by: Operational Conditions, Environmental Conditions, Assoc. Phases/Segments, Assoc. Specialized Phases)
- Create Mission Events (fed by: Assoc. Mission Conditions, Mission Events, Assoc. Phases/Segments, Assoc. Specialized Phases)
- Create Mission Success Metric(s) (fed by: Mission Objectives, Success Criteria, Assoc. Flow Properties)
- Define Functional Profile (fed by: Upper & Lower Limits, Importance Ranking)

Detailed Descriptions:
- Open 'Mission Profile Definition' under 'Modelling' in the menu or through the right-click context menu on the System item.
- Select New button to create a mission profile.
- Enter mission profile details & attach documents/image files.
- Select the Plus icon to open mission parameter dialog. Enter parameter name, unit & initial value. Selected parameters are shown in the Mission Profile graph.
- Create Phases & Segments to show in time profile graph by clicking green cube icon or yellow cube icon respectively — require name, duration, description & parameter values.
- Create Specialized Phases via green plus icon. Each require a name, duration, description and selection of the associated phases and segments. Create Operational Conditions via green plus icon. Each require a name, description and selection of the associated phases and specialized phases. Create Environmental Conditions via green plus icon. Each require a name, environment, env. Characteristics and selection of associated phases and segments, specialized phases.

Each require a name, description, type, occurrence, justification and selection of the phases and segments, specialized phases, mission conditions.
- Create mission success metrics via green plus icon. Each require a name, success criteria and association to one or more system flow properties.
- Associate functional profile of each system functions to phases. Upper/lower property limits are entered, and functional importance terms are selected.
- Configure duty cycles for each model item for a defined phase or segment.
- Configure unit life accrual for each model item which have unit life failure distribution selected.
- Mission Profiles for the project, representing the use cases of the system, has been created.
(Note: the source PDF's step numbering in the Detailed Descriptions panel is slightly offset from the flowchart numbering above, since two flowchart items — steps 6's three sub-bullets — are described together under description item 6, causing the panel descriptions to run 1–12 against 15 flowchart nodes. Outputs:
- MEFL / Mission Profile Report: Using the MADE Report Wizard, a Mission Effective Function List (MEFL) or Mission Profile report can be generated for a selected mission profile.
