WF67: Define Criticality Profile
Pre-Requisites
- A. A valid MADE license to access the software.
- B. SRA Module: access enables ability to edit Criticality Profile.
Detailed Steps
- Open Criticality Profile Editor by navigating to Preferences / Criticality Profile Editor.
- Decision — Custom Profile? Determine if the project requires a custom profile. If yes, proceed to Step 3. If no, skip to Step 8.
- Add New Profile Template To Application by selecting the '+' button.
- Select New Custom Profile & Unlock — select the new custom profile by double-clicking the table row and unlock by clicking the lock button.
- Define Criticality Parameter Data — click through each criticality parameter and create/edit the relevant risk terms, assigning them an appropriate range.
- Define Risk Rules by adjusting matrix values. These rules define how criticality values in the model are aggregated to high-level risk metrics. For each cell, click through until the correct risk value is selected. These risk rules differ across criticality profiles (refer to "Customising Criticality Profiles" for more details).
- Copy Profile to Project to ensure the profile is always associated with the project across multiple applications. You will be given the option to assign a new name to the profile.
- Select as Active Profile — select a custom or default criticality profile to be the Active Profile to ensure relevant analyses utilise the profile.

- Step 3: Add New Profile Template To Application — Main menu: Preferences > Criticality Profile Editor. "Criticality Profile Editor" view has an "Overview" tab listing "Project Profiles" (Name, Owner, Type — e.g. PHMT 1629A Criticality, PHMT Fuzzy Criticality, PHMT ISO26262 Criticality, PHMT RPN Criticality, PHMT Risk Assessment Criteria (FAA), PHMT Risk Assessment Method (RAC)) and "Application Profile Templates" (same list, editable at application level). Click '+' on Application Profile Templates to open "Add Profile" dialog: New Name (e.g. "Custom ARP 4761 Criticality"), Criticality Type dropdown (options: Risk Priority Number (RPN), Fuzzy Criticality, MIL-STD-1629A, ARP 4761 (Rev A) [selected], MIL-STD-882E, ISO26262).
- Step 4: Select New Custom Profile & Unlock — New profile appears in the Application Profile Templates list (e.g. "Custom ARP 4761 Criticality"). Double-click to open the Criticality Profile Editor detail view with tabs: Overview, [profile name] (locked padlock icon), Severity Rules, Risk Rules. Click the lock icon to unlock for editing. The "Definitions" section has sub-tabs Severity, Probability, Risk, Development Assurance Level. Under Severity: a "Terms" list (e.g. Catastrophic, Hazardous, Major, Minor, No Safety Effect) each with Term Details (Category, Name, Description, Color, Max value, DAL Category) and a "Range Chart" visualizing the severity color bands (1.0 to 10.0).
- Step 5: Define Pathing Strategies and Data for Criticality Parameters — Add new terms via the '+' icon (e.g. new term "Disaster" with Description "This is a custom category created for demonstration purpose.", Color picker, Max value e.g. 9.5, DAL Category dropdown (Level A-E)). "Criticality Parameter Strategy" dropdown for Severity offers: Average in the Path (edited values), Earliest in the Path (edited and default values), Earliest in the Path (edited values), Highest in the Path (edited values), Latest in the Path (edited and default values), Latest in the Path (edited values) [selected in example], Lowest in the Path (edited values).
- Step 6: Define Risk Rules — "Risk Rules" tab shows the "Criticality Risk Matrix" — a Probability (rows: Probable, Remote, Extremely Remote, Extremely Improbable) x Severity (columns: No Safety Effect, Minor, Major, Hazardous, Disaster, Catastrophic) grid. Each cell is clicked through a color cycle (Low = green, Medium = yellow/orange, High = red) to define the risk rule for that combination, per the legend (High/Medium/Low).
- Step 7: Copy Profile To Project — From "Application Profile Templates", select the custom profile row and click the "up-arrow" (copy to project) icon. "Add to Project" dialog ("MADE" window): New Name field (e.g. "Custom ARP 4761 Criticality"), Criticality Type (e.g. "ARP 4761 (Rev A)"). Click OK — the profile now appears under "Project Profiles" in the Overview tab, with a "Criticality Profile Summary" showing Name, Description, Owner, Created/Modified metadata, and a "Criticality Parameter Strategy" table (Name, Strategy, Default Value — e.g. Probability/Occurrence: Earliest in the Path (edited and default values), 10; Severity: Latest in the Path (edited values), 10).
- Step 8: Select As Active Profile — In the Overview tab, use the "Active Project Profile" dropdown to select the desired profile (e.g. "Custom ARP 4761 Criticality"). A confirmation dialog "Set Active Criticality Project Profile" asks "Are you sure you want to change your current project criticality profile to 'Custom ARP 4761 Criticality'?" — click OK.
