5. MCE Analysis Worked Example

5.1 Open MCE Editor (Step 1)

To access the MCE analysis, the user must first enable the RAM module in MADE. The Maintenance Cost Estimation editor is accessed from the main menu under Analyses.

5.2 Create New MCE Analysis (Step 2)

The Maintenance Cost Estimates editor contains two types of tabs, which open distinct pages:

• Overview / Management
• MCE Analysis (Display Name)

Section	Description
Maintenance Cost Estimates	A table which lists created MCE analyses. The user can add a new MCE analysis, delete a selected MCE analysis from the table, or create a copy of a selected MCE analysis.
Details	Displays fields to edit the MCE display name and to include a description of the MCE analysis.
Mission Profile Definition	Displays fields which show the currently applied Mission Profile/Group for a selected MCE analysis.
Summary	Displays fields for total time span, total sustainment cost, and cost per system operating hours. Four selectable pie charts display maintenance breakdown by: Maintenance Cost Breakdown categories (Consumables, Cost of Failure, Equipment, Personnel, Spares, System Downtime); Maintenance by Type (Scheduled, unscheduled); Maintenance by Country; Maintenance by Supplier.
Operating Environments	Displays fields which show the currently applied Environment (this can be changed by selecting the Applied Environment button) and its corresponding details, and a chart listing the environmental factors for the applied environment.

To create a new MCE analysis:

1. Select the New MCE button
2. Enter the Name & Description for the new MCE analysis
3. Select a Mission Profile from the drop-down menu
4. Select an applied environment using the Applied Environment button

5.3 Open MCE Analysis Page (Step 3)

To open the newly created MCE analysis:

• Select the MCE analysis tab (under the Overview/Management tab)

The MCE Analysis page is divided into 10 sections:

Section	Description
System Breakdown	A table which lists all items in the modelled system, arranged in a tree (hierarchical) diagram. The total cost column displays the estimated cost for each item and the total for each LOI. The cost per hour column displays the item costs based on the mission profile/group applied to the MCE.
Proposed Maintenance Approach	Displays the item name of the selected item in the system breakdown, the applied mission profile, and selections (drop-down menus) for maintenance category and type.
Item Summary (Overview Tab)	Displays read-only fields for Total Time Span and Duration of Operation of a selected item, Maintenance Supplier & Country, and Mean Time to Failure (MTTF).
Cost Breakdown (Overview Tab)	Displays fields for acquisition, maintenance and detection costs. Also includes a pie chart which shows the breakdown between these 3 costs.
Cost Details (Cost Tab)	Displays fields for entering acquisition, failure, downtime and personnel costs, and an equipment renewal factor.
Maintenance Cost Details (Cost Tab)	Displays fields for tool & equipment and consumable costs, and a spare cost factor.
Detection Cost Details (Cost Tab)	Displays fields for tools & equipment and consumable costs.
Maintenance Information and Factors (Maintenance Tab)	Displays fields for entering the maintenance supplier & country, estimated MTTF, Environmental Loading Factor (ELF) (read-only), and Revised MTTF (read-only).
Maintenance Details (Maintenance Tab)	Displays a radio-button for defining whether maintenance requires shutdown, fields for maintenance interval, maintenance time (MTTR), Maintenance Frequency (read-only), and number of personnel.
Detection Details (Maintenance Tab)	Displays a radio-button for defining whether detection requires shutdown, fields for detection interval, detection time, detection frequency (read-only), and number of personnel.

5.4 Select Model Item (Step 4)

To proceed with the MCE analysis, the user must select an item from the System Breakdown table.

5.5 Select Maintenance Category & Type (Step 5)

After selecting an item, the user selects the maintenance category & type drop-down menus to specify the maintenance approach to be conducted on the item. These selections affect the fields available in the cost and maintenance tabs.

5.6 Enter Cost Input Parameters (Step 6)

After selecting the maintenance category & type, enter the relevant costs and factors.

5.7 Enter Maintenance Parameters (Step 7)

After entering cost input parameters, enter the relevant maintenance parameters.

5.8 Review Item Summary & Cost Breakdown (Step 8)

After the parameters for the cost and maintenance tabs have been entered for all required items, the user should review the total cost and cost per hour columns in the system breakdown, and the cost fields in the Overview Page.

5.9 MCE Analysis Reporting

The MCE analysis report is the main output for the MCE analysis. It is accessed from the Report Wizard, and the user selects the MCE from the table that shall be reported.

The MCE report consists of the following sections:

MCE Summary	Displays a summary of the MCE analysis, including total sustainment cost (all items) and cost per system operating hour (all items), cost & maintenance type breakdowns (including charts), and baseline & applied environment.
MCE Dashboard	Displays charts and overall figures for cost breakdown, maintenance by supplier, and maintenance by country.
MCE (per item)	Displays the entered cost & maintenance parameters for each individual item.
