WF09: Perform Criticality Editing

Pre-requisites

  • SRA Module: access to the Safety and Risk Assessment (SRA) Module enables the 'Criticality and Reliability Editor'.
  • FBD Model: with functions defined, functional flows connected up and failure diagrams populated.
  • Criticality Profile: default or custom criticality profile based off one of the criticality methods/types available in MADE.

Detailed Descriptions (numbered steps)

  1. Access 'Criticality Profile Editor' from the Preferences tab of the main menu bar.
  2. Select Criticality Profile available for the project from the drop-down menu to be assigned as the Active Project Profile.
  3. Access 'Criticality (& Reliability) Editor' from under 'Analyses' tab, of the main menu bar.
  4. Depending on the method of determining criticality with the set Criticality Parameter Configuration of the criticality profile, only FFMs that are considered in determining that criticality may need to be edited (e.g. only end effects FFMs or only start of path FFMs).
  5. Select a FFM from the 'Item / Failure Selection' list, and edit Criticality values with the sliders or crisp values in the numerical input fields. Not all criticality parameters are relevant to the selected criticality profile and may be filtered out with the funnel icon filter button in the top right corner.
  6. Determine if edits to Failure Diagram Criticality are required or skip to the review step.
  7. Select a Fault or Failure Condition of the Failure Diagram, and edit Criticality values with the sliders or crisp values in the numerical input fields.
  8. Access the 'Criticality Viewer' via 'Open View', from under the 'View' tab of the main menu bar.
  9. Select a model item in the System Model viewer and review the criticality values that update in the Criticality Viewer.
  10. Continue until all Criticality values necessary have been defined and reviewed.
  11. Criticality editing has been performed, populating the FBD model with the data necessary for further analyses.

  • Edit FFM Criticality? — No → skip to Edit Failure Diagram Criticality decision; Yes → Edit FFM Criticality (step 5).
  • Edit Failure Diagram Criticality? — No → skip to Access Criticality Viewer; Yes → Edit Failure Diagram Criticality (step 7).
  • All Criticality Values Defined? — No → loop back to Edit FFM Criticality decision; Yes → Criticality Editing Performed.

Step 1: Access Criticality Profile Editor

Step 2: Set Active Project Profile

  • "Criticality Profile Editor" tab: "Project Profiles" section — "Project profiles are saved in your project and are available to apply to your project. All version history is saved and any can be applied. Project profiles can not be edited." Active Project Profile dropdown: "PHMT Risk Assessment Criteria (FAA)". Step 3: Access Criticality Profile Editor (Criticality & Reliability Editor)

  • 'Analyses' menu: Fault Tree, Response Paths, Connection Matrix, Common Mode Analysis, Critical Item Analysis, Criticality & Reliability Editor (highlighted), Technical Budget Analysis, Diagnostic Analyses, Failure Rate Prediction, Markov Analysis, RBD Analysis, Reliability Allocation Editor, Back-Fit RCM, Classic RCM, Maintenance Cost Estimates.

Step 5: Edit Functional Failure Mode (FFM) Criticality

  • "R/C Properties Editor" — "Criticality & Reliability Editor": left panel "Item / Failure Selection" (dropdown "Criticality") shows tree Vehicle System > Convert > Mechanical - rotational - Angular velocity (x2), Coupling, Driveline, Power Generation, Vehicle.
  • Right panel "Function Flow Criticality": Selected Profile "PHMT Risk Assessment Criteria (FAA)", Criticality Method "ARP 4761 (Rev A)". Sliders under "High": Difficulty of Detection 5.8 ("Moderate"), Probability/Occurrence 5.0 ("Remote"), Severity 4.0 ("Minor"), Controllability 7.5 ("Controllability 2"), Software Control (MILSTD-882E) 5.8 ("Redundant Fault Tolerant"). Step 8: Access Criticality Viewer

Step 9: Review Criticality Values

  • Project Explorer tree (left) expanded to Driveline > Failure Diagram (Cause, Mechanism, Fault [2]), Differential, Driveshaft, Half Shaft Front/Rear, Planetary Gearbox Front/Rear, Transmission, Wheel Front/Rear/Resistance, Power Generation (Functions, Control Measures, Control Unit, Diesel Engine [8/8]), Fuel Tank [3] (Functions, Pairs [2], Inlet, Lining, Outlet).
