WF36: Create Functional Diagram

Pre-requisites

  • Configured Project: a project that has been defined.

Detailed Descriptions (numbered steps)

  1. Select the system and open the 'Functional Diagram' found in the 'Modeling' tab of the menu bar or via the right-click context menu opened on the system in the Project Explorer.
  2. Create function with 'New Function' under Function Tools and selecting location on the canvas or via the context menu opened at the desired location. Define the function name with ID, functional narrative, coverage justification, and Level for more information. For greater granularity, functions may be created within functions, to further breakdown the specific functions of the system.
  3. Continue creating functions at all levels of indenture until they are all defined.
  4. Open the Domain Editor with the button in the top right corner of the Functional Diagram Editor. External functions interact with the system and are stored in categories.
  5. Create category with the rectangle button plus icon in the middle or via the context menu opened on the canvas. Define the domain name with a functional narrative for more information.
  6. Create external function that belong to that domain with the square button plus icon or via the context menu open on the domain. Define the external function name with ID, functional narrative, coverage justification, and Level for more information.
  7. Continue creating external functions until they are all defined for that domain.
  8. Continue creating categories to contain all external functions relevant to the system and its expected operations.
  9. External functions are created outside the Functional Diagram Editor and are imported in via 'Import Domain Function' under Function Tools. Navigate to the required level of indenture and import as necessary.
  10. Using 'Connection' under Function Tools, create links between all functions of the system, by selecting the source function and then the target function. Define all connections with a name.
  11. All connections between functions of the system have been created; the functional diagram is complete.

Step 1: Open Functional Diagram

Step 2: Create Function

  • Palette panel: Select, Marquee; "Function Tools" — "New Function" (highlighted), Import Function, Import Domain Function, Connection. Canvas context menu: New > "New Function" (highlighted); Import; Functional Diagram; Failure Conditions; Open Domain Editor; Cut/Copy/Paste; Delete; Zoom In/Out; Link to System Model...
  • "Properties" panel — "FHA Function - New Function": tab General. Name "New Function", Function Number "1", Function ID (empty), Functional Narrative (empty, edit icon), Coverage Justification (empty, edit icon), Level "AFHA" (dropdown).

Step 4: Open Domain Editor

  • "Domain Editor" button shown standalone. "FHA Domain Editor" tab: left nav Domains. Canvas with plus-icon add bar at top, and three domain lanes: "Environment" (plus icon), "Human Factors" (plus icon), "Support Systems" (plus icon). "Functions List" table (Function/Failure Condition/Level/Mission Sections/Initial Severity Class/Revised Severity Class/Comments): E1 - Environment, E2 - Human Factors, E3 - Support Systems.

Step 5: Create Domain

  • Domain lane context menu (on Environment lane): New > New function, "New Domain" (highlighted); Failure Conditions (disabled); Move; Delete. New unlabeled domain lane "New Domain" added below Human Factors/Support Systems. "Properties" panel — "Domain - New Domain": Name "New Domain", Functional Narrative (empty, edit icon).

Step 6: Create External Function

  • New Domain lane context menu: New > "New function" (highlighted), New Domain; Failure Conditions (disabled); Move; Delete. "Properties" panel — "FHA Function - New Function 1": Name "New Function 1", Function Number "E4.1", Function ID (empty), Functional Narrative (empty), Coverage Justification (empty), Level "AFHA".

Step 9: Import External Function(s)

  • Canvas context menu: New; Import > Function, "Domain Function" (highlighted); Functional Diagram; Failure Conditions; Open Domain Editor; Cut/Copy/Paste; Delete; Zoom In/Out; Link to System Model...
  • "MADE" dialog — "Import Domain Functions": "Select the relevant functions from the list of available functions across all domains." Filter field. Tree: Environment (unchecked/partial), Human Factors (unchecked/partial), Support Systems (partial, expanded) > "E3.1 - Air/Ground Determinations" (checked), E3.2 - Crew Alerting (unchecked). Buttons OK, Cancel.
  • Canvas result: "New Function" box (orange, unconnected) next to imported "Air/Ground Determin..." box labeled "E3 - Support Systems" below.

Step 10: Create Connections

  • Palette: Select, Marquee; Function Tools: New Function, Import Function, Import Domain Function, "Connection" (highlighted). Canvas: "New Function" connected via line to "Air/Ground Determin..." box (E3 - Support Systems). "Properties" panel — "Force": Source "New Function", Target "Air/Ground Determinations", Name "Force".
  • Second canvas view: connection now labeled "Force" with arrow from "New Function" to "Air/Ground Determinations" (E3 - Support Systems).
