WF05: Create Detailed FBD Model
Pre-requisites
- FBD Model: previously built for FCM and/or Bond simulations, and has been modeled to the component level (see WF03 or WF04).
Detailed Descriptions (numbered steps)
- Open the System Model viewer at the level of indenture location that parts will be created in.
- Create a part through 'New Item' under 'Modeling' of the main menu bar or via the right-click context menu opened on the system model canvas. Define part details in the General tab of the Properties window.
- Continue creating and defining parts until complete.
- Select a part to begin defining Characteristics, Environment and Features.
- Access Part 'Characteristics' via the context menu. Select relevant Loading Type(s), then select appropriate Loading Factor and Time Factor from their respective drop-down menus.
- Access Part 'Environment' via the same context menu. Select relevant Operating Environment(s), then appropriate Operating Temperature and Operating Temperature Factor.
- Access Part 'Features' via the same context menu. Select relevant Feature(s) from the list, or add a new feature with a name and description.
- Select another part to define Characteristics, Environment and Features until complete.
- Activate the lone arrow icon in the main toolbar, then select a part to create the connection and drag to the second part. After releasing, a part-pair connection shall be established.
- Access 'Functions' Editor via the context menu opened on the part-pair connection, to define function(s), functional flows and flow properties.
- Access Part-Pair 'Characteristics' via the same context menu and select accordingly.
- Continue creating and defining part-pairs until complete.
- Detailed FBD model provides greater granularity of information and further enabled improved engineering analyses.

Step 1: Open System Model Viewer

Step 2: Create Part
- 'Modeling' menu > New Item > Part / Component / Subsystem.
- "Fuel Tank" canvas context menu: New > Part / Component / Subsystem, Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete, Zoom In/Out, Propagate All...
- "Properties" panel — "New Part": General tab fields: Item Name ("New Part"), Item Number, Physical Description, Instance Count (1). "Logistics" section: LCN. "Criticality Flag" section: checkboxes Critical Item, Mission Critical, Loss of System.
Step 5: Define Part Characteristics
- "Part" context menu: Characteristics, Environment, Features, Failure Diagram, Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete, Zoom In/Out, Propagate All..., Load from Library, Save to Library, Advanced Properties.
- "Part Characteristics - New Part" dialog: tabs Characteristics / Features / Environment. "Loading Type(s)" table with Name and Description columns: Bending, Compression, Direct shear, External Pressure, Impacting, Internal Pressure, Tension, Torsion (each with a description of the loading type). "Loading Factor" dropdown ("Steady Load" — described as "refers to a loading that stays near constant during the operation of the item"). "Time Factor" dropdown ("High" — described as "refers to a loading duration that lasts multiple missions in total"). Buttons: OK, Cancel.
Step 6: Define Part Environment
- "Environmental Characteristics" dialog: tabs Characteristics / Features / Environment. Tree of environment categories with sub-items: Acceleration (Exposure to High Accelerations, Exposure to zero Gravity), Electromagnetic Radiation (Exposure to Solar Radiation), Gaseous Contamination (Corrosive Environment, Exposure to Ozone), Humidity (High Humidity, Humidity Differential, Low Humidity), Liquid Contamination (Corrosive Environment, Exposure to Rain), Nuclear Radiation (Exposure to Nuclear Radiation, partially visible). "Operating Temperature" dropdown ("Medium" — "refers to the item operating at around the temperature of the environment the item is within"). "Operating Temperature Factor" dropdown ("Steady" — "refers to a near constant operating temperature during the item operation"). Buttons: OK, Cancel.
Step 7: Define Part Features
- "Features" dialog: "Available Features - New Part": tabs Characteristics / Features / Environment. Table of part features with Name and Description: Bond, Contact Surface, Corner, Edge, Fillet, Gallery, Glued Joint, Groove, Hole, Inner Surface, Joint, Keyway, Notch, Orifice, Outer Surface (partially visible) — each with a one-line description. "Add New Feature" panel on the right: fields Feature Name, Description, buttons Create / Cancel. "New Feature" section at bottom: "If the required Feature is not available in the standard taxonomy of Features, a new Feature can be created and added to this list for the current project." Button: New Feature >. Buttons: OK, Cancel.
Step 9: Create Part-Pair Connection
- Toolbar tooltip "Create a new connection" shown near a connection icon. "Fuel Tank" canvas with parts Inlet, Lining, Outlet feeding IN/OUT blocks; each part shown with a warning/link icon underneath. Four progressive screenshots show: selecting Inlet, dragging a connector from Inlet to Lining (with a "no" cursor mid-drag), completing the connection line between Inlet and Lining, and the final connector rendered with an arrowhead (Inlet → Lining), with the tab title changing to "*Fuel Tank" (unsaved).
Step 10: Define Part-Pair Function(s)
- Right-click context menu on the Inlet–Lining connector: Mirror Pair, Characteristics, Failure Diagram, Functions (highlighted), Maintenance Actions, Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete, Zoom In/Out, Propagate All..., Advanced Properties.
