2. Introduction

The purpose of this user guide is to briefly provide additional background information about PHM features and the context in which they are used.

3. Sensor Sets

The sections below provide definitions for the three types of sensor sets available in the PHM module in the MADE software.

3.1 Legacy Sensor Set

Represents the existing sensor suite within the system. Sensors inherent to the system design are captured as Component Test Points (CTPs). Analyzing a legacy set provides the performance of the current diagnostics capability. CTPs are used to facilitate the inclusion of the existing sensor suite in both legacy and user sensor sets.

3.2 User-defined Sensor Set

This allows the user to place sensors across the system and analyze the performance of the theoretical sensor set. It can be used to either manually design a sensor set, or to improve upon the existing legacy set. As a default, active CTPs are included in a newly created user-defined set so that the user can add more sensors to improve, then re-analyze the diagnostic capability. If the user wants to design a new sensor set from scratch, they can remove the CTPs from the sensor allocation tab.

3.3 Automated Sensor Set

Uses the MADE genetic algorithm to create sensor sets with maximal coverage. Automatically generated sensor sets are created by MADE to achieve the maximum potential coverage of the system whilst also minimizing the number of sensors being used. Users set criteria for the algorithm: a maximum number of sensors, minimum percentage of failures covered, any failures that must be covered, and any sensor locations that must be used. These criteria are fed into the genetic algorithm and are used to automatically produce several candidate sensor sets that fit the criteria.
