Taxonomy / Underlying Model (meta-summary of this research pass)

Taxonomy hunt — search summary and confirmed gaps

Summary of the search performed to find MADE's Function Verb / Flow Noun / Flow Property taxonomy (or its underlying model) beyond what the existing 36-item Knowledge Base extraction already covers.

What was searched

  1. Web search across support.sw.siemens.com for: "function verb list", "flow taxonomy", "functional basis", "standard taxonomy", "MADE taxonomy reference", "flow noun list", "failure mode taxonomy", "MADE data dictionary", and combinations thereof.
  2. Web search for MADE's corporate/technical origin (PHM Technology, "MADe" pre-Siemens tool), which surfaced a public taxonomy landing page and technical papers not indexed under the Siemens Support Center Knowledge Base tab.
  3. Direct browser inspection (screenshots + accessibility-tree reads) of https://www.phmtechnology.com/taxonomy.html.
  4. PDF extraction of PHM Technology's public one-pagers: "MADe for Modelling," "MADe overview," and the 2008 conference paper "The Maintenance Aware Design environment: Development of an Aerospace PHM Software Tool" (Hess, Stecki, Rudov-Clark).
  5. Re-check of KB000132713 (Failure Injection and Failure Propagation) for hidden text/alt-text.
  6. Check of one representative MADE KB video (KB000178615) for YouTube hosting / transcript availability.

Confirmed: no full taxonomy list is published anywhere found

  • No PDF, spreadsheet, or reference sheet enumerating the complete Function Verb / Flow Noun / Flow Property / Failure Concept taxonomy was found, on support.sw.siemens.com, in the MADE Downloads tab area implied by the existing extraction, or on phmtechnology.com. Every source found shows only a partial, cut-off view of the taxonomy trees (via UI screenshots), never a complete enumerated list.
  • The Siemens Support Center's own search (both global and the MADE-product-scoped search box) did not surface any KB article, attachment, or downloadable asset dedicated to the taxonomy itself — the existing KB articles (introduction-to-functional-modeling.md, system-element-definitions.md) only describe the taxonomy conceptually.

What WAS found (new, real findings — written up in sibling files in this folder)

  • functional-basis-academic-origin.md — MADE's Functional Taxonomy is explicitly built on the published academic "Functional Basis" ontology (Stone & Wood 2000), per PHM Technology's own 2008 technical paper. This gives a citable, publicly-available academic source for the style and likely content of the full function-verb/flow-noun hierarchy, though exact identity with MADE's shipped taxonomy is not confirmed.
  • made-standardized-taxonomy-live-ui-screenshots.md — a public, non-KB PHM Technology product page with four embedded screenshots of the live MADE application showing real (partial) taxonomy tree contents for Failure Concepts, Environmental Factors, Functional (Functions + Flows), and Maintenance Actions.
  • phm-technology-marketing-pdfs-taxonomy-notes.md — two PHM Technology one-pagers corroborating the four-domain taxonomy structure and revealing a previously-unmentioned fifth tree: a Sensor taxonomy.
  • failure-injection-article-recheck.md — confirms KB000132713 remains screenshot-only; no new text recoverable without individual-image OCR.
  • videos-transcript-check.md — confirms MADE's videos are not YouTube-hosted (so no external auto-transcript exists) and that transcript extraction from the embedded player was not completed in this pass.

Explicit non-fabrication note

No taxonomy term list has been invented or extrapolated beyond what was directly read off a real screenshot or quoted from a real document. Where a tree was visibly cut off (e.g., under "Control," "Signal," "Maintenance"), this is stated explicitly in the relevant file rather than guessed at.
